ArchivedHistory repeats itselfFrom the article you refer to: Black gospel music reflected the African-American response to the un-Christian prejudice of southern whites Christians. When the slaves were freed after the Civil War, northern whites stepped in and instead of educating and raising the prospects of the black culture they took economic advantage of them and continued the prejudicial treatment of them as inferior humans beings. So the natural consequence of this is the direction that blues music took. Now as to the 50' and 60's, there was an outcry against rock music however not against the music itself; the outcry was about the long-hair of the Beattles and Elvis' wiggle. Preachers concentrated on the externals and ignored the message rock music was bringing to America's youth. It was not until the advent of Rap music that Christians really became alarmed about the message found in rock music. By then America's youth had gone through the anti-war phase and the "flower generation" had become parents. And the criticizm again focused on externals, the focus was on the effect deep bass music has on the libido and not the lyrics. By the time lyrics became the issue, Democrats had appointed liberals to the Supreme Court, the ACLU was actively fighting and destroying the rights of individuals, and the mainline churches were preaching a social gospel and morality was already on a downhill slide. There is no doubt that the message found in popular music has done a lot of damage, but the message of daytime soap opera's, segregation, and other issues the church ignored has done more damage. Native Americans, Hispanics, and Afro-Americans had been excluded from mainstream Christianity for centuries and the backlash should have been expected. Yes, I remember the 50' and the 60's when rock was considered a fad like bell bottoms and it would just fade away. However, to lay blame on music is to ignore parental responsibility to raise their children and the churches failure to address the issues of the day in a truly Biblical perspective. 2 Chronicles 7:13-14 is the only way to get this nation back on track. Focusing on externals only clouds the real issues, which is the failure of modern Christianity to do its job. |
