ArchivedWorld Watch List Religious PersecutionThe day is actually called Yule and was taken from Europe and adapted over thousands of years. it falls in all actuallity between dec 22 and dec 26th. Its deeply intermixed with many religians now days. but the christian holiday of christmas or the celebration of the birth of jesus should be celebrated sometime in June. The calender used when Jesus was born was the old calender where the new year begins on October 31st. The christian calender which is what the whole world now uses as a standard calender has the begining of the year at Jan 1st. Jesus was actually born in the late spring or early summer. The holiday was moved to make converting of the pagans to christianity easier by still allowing them to worship and have holidays on the same days as before. Alas your correct and thats very sad. We have a tradition of makeing gifts for each other as well as buying a couple but never more than 4 under our yule tree. Though we dont skimp on the good food My childs school does none of that. Children can give gifts if they choose but thats a choice. Being as it is that the "christmas tree" is actually a Yule tree the tree is taken from the pagan ritual of decorating a tree and later burning it. Santa Clause has his roots in truth but certainly not a magical creature but a real man. The name and person of "Santa Claus" is thought to have been derived from a 4th century bishop of Myra in Asia Minor (now Turkey) named Saint Nicholas. As legend has it, Nicholas loved children and often anonymously tossed gifts to them down chimneys or through open windows. During his life, Nicholas was attributed with performing various miracles, including halting a storm to save ships at sea and bringing several children back to life. After his death, he became the patron saint of orphans, children and sailors. His popularity grew after the 11th century when Italian soldiers carried his remains to Bari where they built a church in his honor. In Europe during the 12th century, Saint Nicholas Day (December 6) became a day of gift giving and charity. On this day, children would hang their stockings beside chimneys or place their shoes on hearths to awaken in the morning and find that Saint Nicholas had filled them with nuts, candy, fruit and small gifts. (In some Scandinavian cultures, St. Nick was accompanied by a side-kick named "Black Peter" who would leave switches and lumps of coal for children who had misbehaved during the year.) The legacy of St. Nicholas or "Sinterklaas" was brought to the United States by Dutch emigrants in the 1700s. He became the patron saint of New York. The myth of Santa is only partly myth it seems. But it has larger roots in fairy tales and few people relize the history of the name. But in the end never ever ever change yourself or defile yourself into doing something you feel is wrong and or agasint your religian. That would include those parties. |
