ArchivedOne sin greater than another? In this life, yes. However, what has more consequences in this life that would concern most people? Murder, theft, assault, some actions that result in jail time. But so what? Speeding is against the law and if you are caught you get a citation, your car insurance goes up, and it does not stop you from speeding. Vehicular homicide can be one consequence of speeding but who thinks they will kill someone with a car by driving over the speed limit? If you assault someone you can spend time in prison, however those with short fuses don’t stop assaulting others. Premeditated murder can cost the perpetrator his life in some jurisdictions, but manslaughter (unintentional murder) does not. Steal a pack of cigarettes after breaking into a store and in some jurisdictions you are guilty of larceny which carries a greater penalty than petty theft because the thief has the potential of stealing items of greater value. Lying on your tax return can result in the payment of penalties and interest but how many people lie on their tax returns? Tax evasion can result in a prison sentence however tax evasion is the result of on-going lying or not reporting major sources of income on tax returns. An IRS audit can cause people severe anxiety but I have seen companies lie their way through an audit and get away with it. Now, to use your phrase, lets use come common sense about using the Bible when posting to non-believers, they don’t accept the validity of Biblical doctrine, so if you want to show that some actions have various secular consequences use secular law. Then you can show that under God’s constitution all “crimes” carry the same consequences and that Jesus Christ has paid the penalty for all crimes for those who believe. The Supreme Court declared the Texas sodomy laws unconstitutional. When I was actively gay all the states I lived in had sodomy laws the gay community simply ignored and truthfully so did the States, which is one reason most States repelled those laws. In Texas sodomy is defined using the dictionary definition, which means married heterosexuals who engaged in oral or anal sex were technically guilty of sodomy. Secular law is situational, in other words States apply the same law differently depending on the situation. So when posting to non-believers what difference does it make that different “sins” carry different consequences since people will do what the want regardless of the potential penalty. The Biblical consequences of adultery and homosexuality are the same – death to the participants. Is one sin greater than the other, only in the minds of ever-straights since homosexuality is labeled “unnatural”. Have you ever checked the meaning of the Greek words translated “natural” and “unnatural in Romans? The Greek for “natural” can mean instinct, and the Greek for “unnatural” can mean “unable to reproduce”. My instinctual sex drive as a gay man was toward other men, however gay sex does not result is procreation but then contraception has the same result so if homosexuality is a sin so is birth control. Many Christians apply the Bible situationally, if they want a divorce so they can marry a "new love" they do it regardless of the fact they are committing adultery and are under God's death sentence. So I ask you again what difference does it make if one human action is worse than another under secular law since people ignore the law when it is convenient, even Christians drive drunk, lie on their tax returns, use contraception, lie when they find it convenient, and etc. So how do we as Christians show people their need for Christ? By using Scripture that defines one sin as greater than another and that secular law does the same in our world or by introducing men and women to Jesus Christ so they can receive the “power to become children of God” and live “an abundant life”? We are called to preach the gospel and debating the consequences of human action no matter how trivial under secular law does not attain that goal. |
