Child Molestation is a Sin!The Homosexual Link To Pedophilia? It doesn't matter how old a certain piece of math gets; it either works for what it was intended to do, or it doesn't. We discard old formulas and such when we find ones that explain the universe more correctly. The same can't be said for the bible; even when society says being gay is okay, the bible disagrees. Because morals aren't objective. I can't "prove" that being gay is alright. Which is why people shouldn't consult a dusty old book to decide what is right and wrong; that book is just filled with opinions anyway, and they're all thousands of years old. Oops! In any case, my argument still stands. No matter how educated the people who wrote the bible were, they were just people. People who lived thousands of years ago. Slavery was okay a few hundred years ago. Then persecuting blacks was okay. Then persecuting gays was okay. Right now, none of those things are okay. Right now, homosexuality isn't wrong, unless you read the Bible. You say morality goes around in a cycle. I say that's an even better reason not to consult some old book for moral advice. Because apparently, all it's doing is offering you a glimpse of what was "okay" way back when. We don't live way back when, and even if we did, I'd say decide for yourself what's right and what's wrong, instead of following the crowd. (Or "flock," as may be more appropriate here. We're all Jesus' sheep right? X3 ) So what you're basically saying is, if the bible was written in Greece, the morals found within it would support homosexuality? Yeah, I can definitely see why people follow the bible so literally then, as apparently, what was written in it was written because of complete chance, and only taken down because of the time and place it was written. As an added note, morality has never swung so far to the liberal side as it has today. With the incredible expansion in technology (specifically, communication's technology) over the past 100 years or so, people have been more connected to one another than ever before. Almost ANYTHING is considered "fine" by our culture (or America's anyway), as long as it isn't directly harming anyone. I don't think the same can be said of any other time period. We're actually embracing many things that have traditionally been considered taboo. (Like atheism. Everyone loves atheists right? ) I can only see our tolerance for different ways of life increasing as technology increases. People will have more leisure time, thus more time to talk to and understand one another. The Church will have to change it's overly-conservative (in the eyes of our modern day society, anyway) views soon, or risk losing members. (Oops, wait. Isn't that happening at an alarming rate already? I'm not sure, but I thought that church attendance was way down. Maybe that's only in America though? I think they're gaining members in Europe and Asia right? Ah well, anyway...) As to what jjf1990 posted, who said I was offended by it? I wasn't. I was offended by his "Christians aren't taking the bible word-for-word anymore! We need to stop them!" thing at the end of his post. But, I suppose this was the wrong thread to stand up and say "Don't take the bible so seriously!" I probably should have started my own thread saying that elsewhere. Stupid of me, especially since this is a Christian fundamentalist forum. XD Sorry to jff for totally hijacking this thread. |
