Free For all - Open Discussions and DebatesWhy does the media try to discredit Christianity?I moved this thread to the Free For All forum to allow open discussion of this topic. The above Scriptures are quoted to show that the ossuary marked with the single name Yose is Jesus' brother. However this ignores these: James the less was one of the 12 apostles and we know that this James and Joses were not the Lord's brothers. Now let's look at how many Mary's are found in Scripture. Two of the ossuaries in the subject tomb are inscribed with the name Mary, one in Latin and one in Greek. The produces of Lost Tomb of Jesus are assuming that the Latin Mary is the Lord's mother. However, Latin was not widely used until Latin became the lingua franca of the Catholic Church centuries after the date of this tomb. Greek was the lingua franca of the Roman Empire for governmental and commercial purposes. The obvious question that goes unanswered is why a 1st century Jewish family would use the common language of their oppressors in a family tomb. As to the ossuary inscribed in Greek, the producers have appealed to Gnostic writings that date to the 4th century in an attempt to identify this Mary as Mary Magdalene. Then there is the ossuary inscribed Yehudah bar Yeshua or Judah son of Joshua (not Jesus). Here again the producers go far afield in their attempt to identify Yehudah bar Yeshua as the son of Mary and Jesus. The only DNA mentioned in the program is that of the Greek Mary and Yeshua bar Yosef. They then speculate the unnamed disciple who leaned on the Lord's breast at the Last Supper is the Lord's son and this in spite of the fact we are told that those at the Lord's Supper were the 12 apostles none of which can be identified as blood relatives of Jesus. So what can we discern from the available information? First, Yeshua is the Hebrew for Joshua and is translated Jesus only when Yeshua refers to the Lord. Second, there is insufficient information to identify the Latin Mary as the Lord's mother or the Greek Mary with Mary Magdalene. Third, Yose, if it is one of the Yose's of the Bible could be one of at least 3 men. Also the tomb originally contained 10 ossuaries, 3 have not been identified, and the one identified as James is the disputed ossuary of James that the producers assume disappeared from the tomb decades ago. This program and its accompanying book will deceive many and is based on assumptions, speculations, and in my opinion poor scholarship. |
