Anything GoesWishing you and Yours a Very Merry ChristmasDecember 25 was a pagan celebration dedicated to Mithras, the sun god. Early Christians celebrated "Theophany" or the Revelation of God on January 6. Constantine in an effort to maintain peace among rival religious factions merged the two celebrations and mandated they be celebrated on December 25. The Christmas tree is from German paganism, the yule log from British paganism, and etc. The Protestant Reformation saw the demise of Christmas as the reformers viewed the Mass of Christ to be a Catholic tradition based in paganism. The Puritans did not celebrate Christmas. In 1870 Congress legislated December 25 as the first Federal holiday, but not as a celebration of the birth of Jesus. You need to get over yourself and simply enjoy the season as a time to celebrate family gatherings. BTW, some Orthodox groups still celebrate Theophany and Christmas on January 6th or 7th. |
