Trinity DebateJohn 8:58 & Exodus 3:14John 8:58 is used to show that Jesus claimed to be God since Exodus 3:14 tells us that God is the great "I AM". However, is God the great "I AM" or is this translation forced on the Hebrew "hyh" (Strong's #1961)? The same Hebrew word is translated "I will be" in Exodus 3:12, "become" in Deuteronomy 4:32, "fell" in Joshua 22:20, and etc. The better translation of Exodus 3:14 is "I WILL BE" not "I AM". Now, when we take every word that proceeds from the mouth of God into account we can discern that Jesus was not claiming to be God, but God's predetermined plan (Acts 2:23) for the redemption of those who are saved by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus used the phrase "I am" in the following: John 6:35 35 Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall not hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst NAS John 8:12 12 Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life." NAS John 10:7 7 Jesus therefore said to them again, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. NAS John 10:11 11 "I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. NAS John 11:25-26 25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me shall live even if he dies, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this? " NAS John 14:6 6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me. NAS John 15:1 15:1 "I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. NAS However, Jesus never said "I am God". |
