Trinity DebateJohn 17:3This is from an apologetic site that tries to affirm the Trinity using John 17. All of these 7 points can be easily refuted. 1. Jesus is God’s Son, well so are the angels (Genesis 6:2, 4; Job 1:6, 2:1, 38:7). 2. Jesus gives eternal life to all that God give him. How is this indicative that Jesus is God since in vs. 2 we are told that God gave Jesus all authority over those God gave to Him? This verse actually tells us that God the Father is superior in power and authority to Jesus. 3. Angels existed even before the world was created (Job 38:7) but angels are not God. Ephesians tells us that all true believers were chosen by God to be in the Lord before the foundation of the world. All this verse shows is that Jesus is God’s predetermined plan for the salvation of mankind. What this verse does not tell us is that Jesus had God’s glory before the world was created. We are told in Isaiah 42:8 and 48:11 the Yaweh will not give His glory to another. Therefore since we know from the OT that Yaweh is the Father to interpret any part of John 17 to show that Jesus is God contradicts God’s word. 4. Jesus demanded? How was Jesus glorified, by His crucifixion and resurrection. We must keep in mind this prayer was spoken the night the Lord was arrested and the night before His crucifixion. 5. Jesus states that everything that the Father has belongs to him, which makes him the heir of everything that exists. Which meand the Son is not equal to the Father since an heir can be a person subordinate in authority or position. Also since the Father has designated the Son His heir we can see that the Son does not yet have exclusive use of all the belongs to the Father since an heir inherents upon the death of the testator. 6. Jesus is in the Father and the Father is in the Lord (John 17:21), the Father is omnipresent so this does not prove that Jesus is God. 7. Jesus was an object of the Father’s love before the foundation of the world. If we use this logic for John 3:16 then the world is also God since “God so loved the world”. Also Ephesians 1 defeats this arugment since God loved us before the foundation of the world, which make us an object of the Father's love before the foundation of the world. All this site has done is to try to rationalize away the Lord’s statement in verse 3 that the Father is the only true God. Also what this apologist has chosen to ignore in John 17 is that Jesus states everything He taught was told to Him by the Father (verse 8), which shows that Jesus lacked one essential characteristic of God and that characteristic is omniscience. |
