Trinity DebateElohiym and plural pronounsThat's exactly the point. They've been reading this verse for thousands of years with the most strict monotheistic views. Never once have they ever looked at this verse and thought that God might be plural. Whether God revealed His true nature, or not, doesn't change the terminology used in Genesis. Trinitarians look to the word "Elohim" to support their argument (which Elohim means "God" or "gods", but nothing about that word describes multiples in persons). So if you are going to use that word as an argument, then you can only use it to say "There is one God". Or to use it to say "There are many gods". As the word means only one of two things "God" or "gods". If you look to the terminology He used when speaking to Himself ("Let Us make..") as so called proof of "plurality", then you would be trying to promote the latter definition of elohim, "gods". You can tell me God didn't reveal that He was a trinity until the NT, but if you are going back to the OT to try to support a plurality, we have to deal with the fact that not only the Jews never believed a trinity, but they also never had the slightest hint that there was even a plurality in God (not 2, not 3, not 5 or 6). No plurality whatsoever. (The book of Genesis didn't suddenly change after the NT) |
