Aineo or anyone else heard of Memra in the Targums?
The Targums were authoritative rabbinic interpretations of the Scriptures used in the 1st Century churches. Since the common language was Aramaic, the Hebrew Bible was translated into the Aramaic langauge. This translation was known as the Targum. There were three main targums in use: the Onkelos Targum, the Targum of Rabbi Jonathan ben Uzziel, and the Jerusalem Targum.
In the Targums, the Aramaic term Memra (Word) is used when God is seen as interacting with creation. For the ancient Hebrews, when you met the Word (Memra) of God, you have met God Himself.
I just started reading this stuff about the Targums. I didn't know about it before now. Anyone out there know much about this? Thanks.
