Trinity DebateThe importance of PurgatoryThe Holy Spirit may dwell in us, and Christ may stand with us, but I'm talking about the presence of the Father. We even now appear as dirty rags unto Him. We aren't pure or perfect even if we are Christians. If we just walked into Heaven right now, we'd have to be washed down a number of times! Man gains nothing from inventing things like purgatory. Scripture speaks of man's soul purged in fire. Again, if you feel like your pure enough of a human being that you don't need purgatory, then be careful it isn't arrogance instead. http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12575a.htm The Catholic Encyclopedia explains purgatory in further detail It's a place of "purging" for venial faults we commit even as Christians. Where exactly in scripture does it say we pass directly into Heaven or fall directly to hell when we die? No such passage exists. Also, where do you suppose all the people go who never heard of Jesus and were pagans? Or who lived good lives but didn't know much about Jesus?Do so many people go to hell, no because our God is just and merciful and fair. These people go to lower places of purgatory. |
