Free For all - Open Discussions and DebatesAn Atheists ChallengeAurelius, it is a bit arrogant of you to assume that no Christian has questioned some aspects of the "accuracy" of some details in the Bible. However, the Bible was not written as a scientific treatise, it was given to us to teach us the character of God and His Messiah. The word translated "was" in most if not all Bibles can just as accurately be translated "became". But this change of one word with Isaiah 45:18 and we see the possibility that Genesis 1:2 forward is a recreation of a desolated universe. However, as I said the Bible is not a science textbook and to expect it to be is ludicrous since the ancients did not have our knowledge of our physical world. Now, if you want to discuss science and creation we have a forum for that purpose. What is interesting about science if how scientists define constants. The speed of light is an interesting study that affects all scientific theories. You might like to visit this Internet site and check out the current research into measuring light speed. Barry Setterfield[/b] Barry's wife Helen (tuppence) moderates our Evidence for ID forum. Now you can and probably will dismiss Barry's site out of hand because he is a creationists but that would be a mistake since he became a creationist based on scientific data not an illogical faith based on Genesis 1, which is also true of his wife. You did not post that Matthew is the first book of the Bible. However, to understand the NT one needs a good foundational understanding of the OT and Hebrew culture. As to what your deacon told you there are many theories concerning Genesis. One is as you posted it is a collection of Hebrew oral myths. Another is Moses had access to earlier manuscripts and edited them together. Some scholars believe that the writing styles of Genesis reflects that of 7 different individuals. What is interesting about scholars is that opinions change with the times. We can all find a "scholar(s)" to back up our prejudices and/or beliefs. |
