ArchivedJust for sake of my endless questioning mind.Crystal, You seem like someone on this site I can definitely get along well with, so let me gladly explain my views to you. Japan, is one country that has made guns illegal. How many gun related deaths did they have last year? Somewhere in the double digits. So gun control laws can be effective in keeping guns away from the bad guys. However I agree with you that not all guns should be made illegal. I think the process for getting a gun license should be pretty elaborate, although I'm not familiar with the current process so I can't comment on it. I think the idea that we need guns to defend ourselves from thieves and criminals comes from the cut throat world of crime that the media constantly bombards us with. It's "shock tactics", where the news shows the most shocking or frightening story in order to get good ratings. Meanwhile it's not street sriminals that are the largest threat to us, but rather those that horde wealth and perpetuate the poverty from which these criminals spawn. Tougher gun control could be achieved by siphoning some of the money from chasing down drug dealers. Like you pointed out, those caught with guns get a few years in jail, while those caught possessing drugs can get more. We're wasting prison money and space on those that shouldn't be there. My thoughts on the gun issue pretty much parallel "Bowling for Columbine" if you haven't already seen it. It shows that the US doesn't actually have more guns than other countries, yet we use them to kill more. So in that regard, I agree with you. Just outlawing all guns won't solve the problem. The Constitution guarantees the right to possess firearms in orderto prevent the military from ruling over the people. So guns aren't inherently useless. But our culture needs to change. I made the comment about looking at all religions because Alpha gave the impression that common sense shows the wiccan religion to be ridiculous while Christianity is not. I just wanted to make a point that "common sense" doesn't favor one religion over another. But I definitely don't believe religions to be ridiculous in general. In fact, I completely agree with you about faith keeping us going when all else is lost. That's exactly why I feel not only that every religion has a right to exist, but that it is good that there is diversity. Even "non-religions" like atheism or philosophy can be the faith that some people need. On a related note, you're wiccan? That's awesome. |
