Some people get their thrills by killing people; others by raping 9 year old girls. You can't go around chalking up sin to "well that's just their personal preference". Sin isn't defined by how we view it, but by how God views it.
That being the case, we should not appeal to our own tastes in music to determine what's acceptable. We should try to find out what God says about it.
I agree that what God says about music indeed sets the standard for Christian music (
primarily the lyrics), but as for the "instrumentals", what does Scriptures say in regards to this?
- Miriam sang unto the LORD while playing the "tambourine". (Exodus 15:2)
- David had played his "harp" to bring relief to King Saul who was tormented by an evil spirit. (1Samuel 16:16)
- Women approached King Saul and sang a song for Davids victory over the Philistines with "with tabrets{tambourines}and lutes" (1 Samuel 18:6)
- Saul tried to kill David while he was playing the "harp" (1Samuel 19:8)
- David and the entire house of Israel celebrated the LORD with all their mights with "all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals". (2 Samuel 6:5)
- "TRUMPETS" in the scriptures are used to sound messages.
The scriptures state that music "instrumentals" have the ability to alter moods and affect our conscience. Even in non-contemporary Christian music, depending upon the listener, it can either lift up their spirits OR lower their self-esteem and other emotional variations.
God Bless!
