ArchivedOne thing a full professor of history never said re: Jesus?Ah, but yours was the post that started the whole 'people die for a lie' argument, a deliberate off topic diversion when you couldn't respond to my comments on your original post ABOUT JESUS:
Geshtinnanna it is much easier to set up a straw man and knock it down than to confront the real issue as it was presented and offer a considered and logical response. Okay, people will 'die for a lie' if that is how you wish to believe events went down in Jonestown. You know that the Jonestown comparison is hopelessly flawed and never were those pathetic souls considered martyrs, which was specifically what I was referring to. Let's assume we all know about and understand the martyrdom of Jesus' disciples, and put it this way:
Anyway that entire back and forth was off topic. Again, in the interest of trying to follow this thread, HERE is what started it all. Ges. said
After repeatedly refuting the above with no adequate response, then aimlessly wandering around Jonestown, here's another synopsis: I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: 'I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept His claim to be God.' That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic-on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg-or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon, or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to. (C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity, 1952) Jesus a prophet like all the rest? Not a word of truth in it. |
