ArchivedOne thing a full professor of history never said re: Jesus?Let me try again. You said My basic response to you was: He was a liar, insane, or the son of God. I said, speaking of the martyrdom of the disciples and much of the early church: "His followers submitted to torture and death testifying to the fact that He rose from the dead. This scenario was repeated throughout HIStory up until today. As for his contemporaries, the people who lived with him, loved him and later wrote about him: No one would offer up their life and their children's lives for the sake of a lie." So by your response: So you are saying he was not evil, but he "knew how to lie". Do you mean he DID lie about being the Christ, knowing it would lead to his crucifixion? If not, I assume you believe he was severely delusional -- to the point of insanity. If that was the case his disciples concocted the resurrection, then were martyred liars. But you'd have to admire the fact that they didn't break ranks and expose each other for the liars they were, when they were being pulled limb from limb, burned alive or crucified. They just went right on claiming Jesus was the resurrected Christ and encouraging more people to do the same. As to your second remark Knowing something is the truth (certainty even unto death) is not the same as "not knowing something is a lie" (naivete or uncertainty). I repeat: a person will NOT give their life for a lie, it should be unnecessary to add: "OR for an uncertainty". Again we are talking about the people he lived with who claimed they saw him after he arose from the dead - none of them denied the resurrection later though they had every opportunity to come clean before they died. They just became more adamant. So if they believed he arose from the dead and were willing to die proclaiming it, Jesus DID rise from the dead or He lied to them. Really your argument as it stands doesn't make much sense to me. Maybe you could clarify or amend it. |
