It is called "free will". Life is full of choices and faith or belief in God or gods is one of those choices.
If you study the lives of, Abraham, David, etc. you can see "free will" at work. Abraham lied about Sarah being his wife, David was an adulterer and a murderer yet both were blessed of and by God. By their exercise of "free will" these and other Biblical figures broke fellowship with God and He was the One who initiated the healing process. Why? The faith of the law or fellowship breaker.
