Going back to my original post, it makes zero sense to any sane person that a loving God with murder one of his believers for starting a fire when told not to do so. The punishment doesn't fit the crime. This is the equivalent to Jaywalking carrying a 30 year prison term for the offender.
I think I understand what you are getting at Tommy J because when it is said that God is Love it is assumed that God must be more loving than us. Apparently you and I love our children more than the god in the old testament who would have us kill them for the temporary act of disobedience. Also the Love taught by Jesus in the new testament is seemingly superior than the Love taught by the god of the old testament. If God is Love this would suggest that Jesus is a superior god to the god of the old testament. Have you ever considered that the god of the old testament is a theological fusion of two gods one benevolent and the other malevolent? What I think Tommy J is asking is nothing to do with a change in the law or a change in the covenant, but has everything to do with the apparent change in the actual nature of God. It looks like God himself changed from someone who would punish with excessive force to someone who would delay punishment altogether until some distant future.
Aineo's response to Tommy J's last post was well suited. Also look at what Abraham was about to do when God tested his faith by telling him to sacrifce his own son. Jesus said if you love your parents more than Him, you are not worthy of Him (Matthew 10:37). So what is the point here? God is the number one priority. Even if God told you to kill, does He not have the power to bring back life? So it is a bad comparison to say that we love our children more than God if God tells us to kill our children. In addition is He not testing your faith in
Him to see what is number one in your life?
