Religious Cults & False Prophets~ Discussions and DebatesWord Faith teachers and their Blasphemous Heresies!!!(Omega): I started to respond to you last night, but decided to first read through the link you included in your original post (http://www.discernment.org/salvation.html). To answer your question: If 1) you are correct and Jesus didn't suffer in hell, and 2) your definition of heresy is correct then the answer is "yes", the teaching is heretical. But by this standard wouldn't one call all doctrinal error "heresy?" As you know, I made reference to the scripture in Acts 2, but after reading through the aforementioned link/article, I'm beginning to be persuaded that Jesus didn't suffer in hell. As Paul Belli rightly points out, So, this seems to indicate pretty clearly that Jesus did not suffer in hell. (Appreciate the link in this respect!) The only lingering issue I have comes down to this:
Now I edited out part of your text there, but I hope you don't find me taking anything out of context. I just wanted to focus on one point - also reflected in Belli's article, in which he writes:
Unless I'm misreading Belli, he finds Joyce an "enemy" of the cross? Not a true Christian? And you find her disrespectful of Jesus' finished work on the cross? I simply find her in error on this point of docrtine. I would never call her an "enemy" of the Cross - I won't argue that one could technically charge that, but I don't agree with the idea that she is hostile to the Gospel. Moreover, I wouldn't imply that she's disrespectful of Jesus in any way. She simply used to be in error over this point of scripture (i.e. Belli records she's since corrected her text). If you asked me 1-week ago "Did Jesus suffer in Hell?" I would have said, "I believe so". Now, I've learned something and I've renewed my mind - if asked the same question today I'd say "I don't believe so". So does that mean that you will charge me with the same disrespect of Jesus' sufferings? Was I an "enemy of the cross" two days ago? I don't believe that would be fair at all. Moreover, do you think that anyone praying the "sinners prayer" as a result of Joyce Meyers older teaching on this point would be rejected by Jesus? I believe he'd accept them in spite of this error, though he'd surely want the matter cleared up. (In other words, it's not as if Mrs. Meyers was claiming something radical, like Jesus was an alien and the only way to pray is while standing on your head.) In any event, I'll summarize by saying that I appreciate the point of clarification, but not the manner in which you chose to post it. Perhaps a simple, informative title like "Did you know? Jesus did NOT suffer in hell?" followed with text pointing out the origin(s) of the mistaken belief and a concise scriptural clarification would have been better? |
