ArchivedA question for straight peopleIt was an obvious attempt at levity. Perhaps with such a serious subject such an attempt is inappropriate. Regardless, I didn't mean to literally 'muzzle' Jerry Falwell and others that share his beliefs regarding homosexuality, but rather reasonable Christians to distance themselves from his bizarre obsession and ignorance with regard to gay people and their experiences.
I'm glad to hear that. More Christians need to do the same. When his following dwindles to virtually nothing as a result of his 'finger in his ears' attitude with regard to this, I'll start believing that most Christians have left the dark ages. Here's the problem with that position. When you and other more reasonable Christians make that assertion you are still essentially saying the same thing as the 'choice' people. You are telling me and other gay people we're inherently flawed from the beginning. Instead of recognizing that we're different and equal the implication is that 'gayness' is fixable with either therapy or hormonal treatment. I and other gay people take great offense that you and others believe us to be an aberrational flaw that with some minor tweaking is repairable. There is nothing wrong with me other than I chose to love a man instead of a woman and that causes no harm to anyone. I have studied the Bible. Firstly, I think it's shocking that you find no moral objection to your God testing someone's faith by asking them to murder their own child. Does 'your God' play cruel April fools jokes on his people? Do you not think their would have been about say, 1 million more appropriate ways to test the faith of one of his believers? The Catholics believe in the Divine inspiration of the Pope. To be topical, lets say John Paul II ex carthia proclaimed that upon his death that all Catholics should murder their first born child as a test of faith otherwise to be ex-communicated, only then upon his death the Vatican announces his death with a letter proclaiming to not do so, it was just a test of faith. What would you think of the morality of such a religion and such a god? It's a bizarre test of faith that God asked Abraham to murder his child, and you're simply being intellectually dishonest not to admit that it is otherwise. Regarding the rest of some of the 'unusual requests' that 'God' has of his believers, I'll post another thread at some point and you can point out the flaws in my interpretations if you can.
The only time we've discussed history is when I posted the analogy regarding black discrimination. Your reply back was with regard to black-on-black violence or Asain-on-Asian violence. Both are historically accurate and two wrongs do not make a right. IIRC, during the trial or sentencing of Matthew Shepherds killers they tried to defend their actions because they were Christians. Now Aieno, unlike you, I'm not broad brushing other Christians as violent against gay people in the slightest it's aberrational -- I'm not that ignorant. However, Christian organizations like the KKK do not help the Christian public relations campaign with regard to this issue. That's reprehensible and evil. As stated earlier the muzzle was a poor attempt at humor. However, I'll tell you this. At every opportunity I have I discuss issues within the gay community with its hierarchy that I have much passion about. One of them is gay pride parades. I hate them. They are nothing more than a 3-ring sex circus of the worst absurdities with our community. I've told over-and-over the organizers of these events to tone it down about 30 decibels. The other thing I have passion about is as you stated trying to create a dialog with people such as yourself. [why else would I take the time to discuss this with you?] This endless screaming at each other from both sides of a metaphorical long dining room table is going no where fast. But in having a dialog both sides need to set some ground rules that seem virtually impossible. On the gay side we believe, Christians need to stop the rhetoric about choice and actively trying to get people into their 'ministering programs' of becoming ex-gay. If people chose to on their own, so be it, but don't go to gay events and protest handing out the ex-gay literature. That's hateful. On the Christian side, gay people need to stop the mudslinging. We need to stop the guerrilla warfare tactics of invading Churches and such. Both sides need to develop what I coined as our 'core values'. These are things that are uncompromising in this battle. At the same time we need to develop a separate list of issues that are compromise where we can meet half way in between and find common ground. From their I would hope we can at least start talking which is the only logical beginning from my perspective. That does not eliminate the possibility you have deep seated psychological issues that could be addressed by a competent therapist.[/quote] Since you posted this in the reply to me, I'll assume it was an error on your part. |
