want to ask u simple direct question, Can show me in the bible Jesus tell u "i'm god, so worship me"....no body show me that verses since i was born.
Hi budin24. I hope you still read this page. This is going to sound a little like Phiz's reply. I hope you read all of it, and truly consider it in your heart. I found the first part on a muslim-christian dialogue website (answering-islam.org), and I liked how the author presented things. The verses at the end are my additions. if you have a Bible, I also encourage you to read all the gospels. God bless!
The Question: Please show me where in the Bible it says that Jesus said he is
God and worship me as most Christian would like to think he is.
(An) Answer:
N O W H E R E does Jesus say "I am God, worship me."
Suppose a man does indeed come up to you and does says,
"I am God, worship me."
Would you believe him?
Would you worship him?
The immediate reaction of any decent monotheistic believer would be to call the person making such a claim an impostor and a blasphemer. If that is your reaction too, then why would you demand something from Jesus which you aren't going to accept anyway? Most would declare insane anybody who would make such a statement. Jesus knows about this natural reaction as well as anybody else and saw no reason to make his claims in such a foolish way. But he did make the claim in indirect ways and those are just as clear.
Maybe you are cautious and open and don't want to completely dismiss such a claim ... after all, saying that God is not able to come and appear in the form of a man does restrict his power, and you believe in an all powerful God, ... but you would at least demand conclusive proof for such a claim, wouldn't you? After all, if you do worship somebody who is not God you are guilty of idolatory. But refusing to worship God when he demands so is just as great a sin.
What matters in the end is not the existence of this literal statement, but whether there is clear evidence that he is indeed God, no matter in which form he issued the claim. If there is clear proof for his divine identity, then you have to worship Him even if the wording of his commands is not precisely the way you may think they should be. We cannot prescribe for God howhe has to reveal himself before we accept it.
For example, in the Gospel according to John, (speaking of eternal life) Jesus says, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies." (John 11:25). He makes the offer of eternal life conditional on faith in his own person. This would be blasphemous for anybody other than God. This is an incredible claim.
When you read the Gospels carefully you will find that
consistently
• Jesus talks like he is God,
• Jesus acts like he is God,
• Jesus gives evidence for claiming this authority rightfully by performing miraculous signs.
After 3 years with his disciples we read how one of them asks Jesus and wants to be "shown the Father (God)".
Jesus answered, "Don't you know me, Philip, even after
I have been among you such a long time?
Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. ...
Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the
Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the
miracles themselves." (John 14:10-11).
Jesus expected the disciples and the people around him to recognize his true nature and identity from his words which are only appropriate for God to speak and from his deeds. Jesus does give enough proof and then lets you draw your own conclusions. Everybody could make the claim to be God. And many have made claims to be (a) god throughout history. Only the true God can give true evidence for it and if you have the evidence there is no need for the explicit command to worship anymore. The statement "I am God" adds nothing of substance to the question regarding his identity. His real identity is established by the proof he gives, not by claims each and everybody can make. After he has given the evidence, there is no more need for the statement. Those who are open for the truth will recognize the evidence, those who ignore
the evidence won't be convinced either if he adds this specific statement. And if you have recognized his true identity, worshiping him is only proper and will nearly be an "automatic" response.
I know this is an incredible thought, it is unbelievable. That is why it took even the disciples themselves such along time to really understand it. They have really only started to comprehended the meaning of it all after Jesus' own death and resurrection, after they meet the risen Lord.
In the Gospel according to John, end of chapter 20, and the Gospel according to Matthew, end of chapter 28, we read how Jesus receives worship and affims this. Even though he never demands the worship, he accepts it and confirms it as proper.
You claim:
N O W H E R E Jesus says "I am God, worship me."
and understand this as
NOwhere Jesus says "I am God, worship me."
and you are right when taking it the literalistic way. He never says these very words. But he makes his claims very clear in many other ways. Open your eyes and you will see that the right way to read this statement is
Now HERE Jesus says "I am God ..."
***Indeed, if you study the Bible, you will find that Jesus talks and acts in a way that is unbecoming for a mere human being. Many times, he claims attributes and powers that is exclusively for God – no one can say those things without committing blasphemy, unless he has the right to say those things because he is divine. You and I both see him as a man of God, however, so he couldn’t have been lying. You ask for verses where Jesus claims to be God. Honestly read the scriptures, and you will find that though the exact phrasing that you want may not be there, his claim is still irrevocably clear – He truly is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). Consider the following:
a) God has no beginning or end; He existed before the world…
Isaiah 44:6 Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel, And his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: "I am the First and I am the Last; Besides Me there is no God.
Jesus claims these same attributes.
Revelation 1:10-13
I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet, saying, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last…Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band.
John 17:5 -- And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.
b) b) Only God is worthy of worship. Jesus' followers thought him worthy of worship and he accepts and affirms their worship.
John 9:35-38 – Jesus heard that they had cast him out [a blind man whom He healed]; and when He had found him, He said to him, "Do you believe in the Son of God?” He answered and said, “Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?” And Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him and it is He who is talking with you.” Then he said, “Lord, I believe!” and he worshipped Him.
*Compare with Acts 10:25, 26 -- As Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. But Peter lifted him up, saying, "Stand up; I myself am also a man."
John 20:27-29 Then He said to Thomas, "Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing." And Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Thomas,[a] because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
Matthew 28:16-20 -- Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
*this would have been a perfect time for Jesus to tell them not to worship Him, since the verse said, "some doubted." He could have said, "you are right to doubt, since I am not God. Don't worship me." but instead he tells them of his authority and he even affirms the existence of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
c) only God can forgive sins. Jesus forgave sins.
Mark 2:5-10 – When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, Son your sins are forgiven you.” And some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak blasphemies like this? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” …when Jesus perceived that they reasoned thus within themselves, He said to them, “Why do you reason thus…which is easier to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you’ or to say, ‘arise, take up your bed and walk?’ But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins…”
d) God is our judge. Jesus claims to be the judge.
John 5: 21-23 -- For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will. For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
Matthew 25:31-32 -- When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats.
e) other verses where Jesus makes huge claims.
John 10:28-30 – And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father who has given them to me is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. I and My Father are one.
Matthew 11: 27-28 -- All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
John 14:6, 7, 9 – Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on, you have known Him and have seen Him...he who has seen Me has seen the Father.”
John 15: 4, 5 -- Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
In these verses (and many others) Jesus claims to be God. It is clear that He thought of himself as more than a mere human being. He said things that only God could say. He accepted worship. He claimed for himself God's characteristics. He did this because He had the right to -- he IS God. Indeed, Jesus is the fulfillment of the prophecy in Isaiah 9:6, written hundreds of years before:
For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
