I used drinking solely as an example. There are plenty of other things that Christians do or don't do that aren't necessarily spoken of in the Bible, and that seems to be where I have the problem.
When there is no specific commandment in the Bible concerning any issue, how can we defend any position that we as Christians take without it seeming to take the current condition of society into account, and thereby make it seem that our convictions are more based on society than on the Bible?
Many Christians will use "separation" as a conviction to not smoke, not go to the movies, not swear (what is a swear word, anyway..... doesn't society tell us what 4-letter words are bad?), not to listen to rock music, not to drink, not to wear shorts, etc. ad infinitum. How can these positions be defended against a skeptic who says that society has defined the good and the bad in each of those instances?
