I would like to thank both LindaBee2 and Aineo for the explanations provided in this thread.
I understand the explanations given, and I understand the problems with certain doctrines put forth by certain groups.
I have often fallen into the trap of taking verses the wrong way, and one time I even made a muslim out of myself.
I have left islam far behind me now, but there are traps even in the world of christendom.
What criteria do you suggest I use to discern what parts of the scripture are to be taken literally, and what parts are not?
I'm not trying to be a nuisance, I'm desperately trying to find my place.
I know that the Holy Spirit can guide in these matters, and other scriptural references can be used as a criteria. But are there any other criteria I should be aware of?
I have family members who are Jehovahs Witnesses, I would also like to know how I can prove to them that a certain verse should not be taken literally whilst another should be.
If you think I am needlessly covering the same ground over and over again, I shall stop. I often get a little irritated when people keep pressing on a point whilst ignoring others, I wouldn't want to do the same to others.
Thank you both.
