For five Sundays, a visiting teacher in our Sunday school class used a PowerPoint presentation to argue that Genesis, Chapters 1-2, provided a solid scientific explanation of the origin of the universe.
This scientists is trying to force faith into a scientific mold by ignoring how a Hebrew word is used throughout the OT and is doing it in a secular newspaper editorial not in his Sunday school class.
Genesis 10:10-11
10 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.
11 Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah, KJV
In these two verses the Hebrew word "erets" is used twice.
1 Samuel 28:14
14 And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself.
KJV
2 Kings 13:18
18 And he said, Take the arrows. And he took them. And he said unto the king of Israel, Smite upon the ground. And he smote thrice, and stayed.
KJV
Isaiah 51:23
23 But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over.
KJV
Zechariah 8:12
12 For the seed shall be prosperous; the vine shall give her fruit, and the ground shall give her increase, and the heavens shall give their dew; and I will cause the remnant of this people to possess all these things.
KJV
In these verses the word "ground" is the Hebrew word "erets".
