The bible is very clear about where we go, and when, and for how long.
All the faithful of the OT will rise first, at the time of Judgement, to stand before the judgement seat along with those who have not died yet. But the living ones will be right after the 'sleeping' ones.
All of humanity will be judged at the same time. We're going to be sorted--the sheep on the right and the goats on the left.
So the patriarchs and those who loved God with a perfect heart (such as King David) and the prophets, etc., will be compensed the same as us. If you look into it, you'll find that regardless of OT or NT, faithfulness (by obedience and trust) is the only way to salvation. God didn't expect anyone to be perfect, now or then. David wasn't perfect. Nor Moses, Abraham, none of them. They transgressed. But they never turned to other gods and they obeyed and trusted God with a 'perfect' heart--which means they were 'One God' Men. As opposed to Dan, Solomon, --any who were idolatrous.
The only thing was, that salvation they were to received had not been purchased, yet, by the Lamb of God. But it was a sure thing, so they had a promise no different than ours except ours is retroactive and theirs was proactive (or maybe vice versa, but you know).
Until the curse for sin was covered by the perfect sacrifice, nothing was done. Jesus said, when he gave up the spirit 'It is finished'.
The curse on us was for Abel's lifeblood in the ground by the hand of Cain. The violator of the law is under a curse but the payment was made for us when Christ took it upon himself and “cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree” A curse that has overtaken its victim is a spent force--it has justified itself by recompense.
Deuteronomy 31:16
And Jehovah said to Moses, Behold, you shall sleep with your fathers. And this people shall rise up and go lusting after the gods of the strangers of the land into which they are going, into their midst. And they will forsake Me and break My covenant which I made with them.
2 Samuel 7:12
And when your days are fulfilled, and you shall sleep with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who shall come out of your bowels. And I will make his kingdom sure.
Job 14:10-13
But man dies and is cut off; and man expires, and where is he?
As the waters fail from the sea, and a river falls away and dries up,
so man lies down and does not rise. Till the heavens are no more, they shall not awake, nor be awakened out of their sleep.
Who will grant that You would hide me in the grave, that You would keep me secret, until Your wrath is past, that You would set me a fixed time and remember me?
Psalms 13:3
Look! Answer me, O Jehovah my God; enlighten my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,
Daniel 12:2
And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
Dan 12:13
But you go on to the end, for you shall rest and stand in your lot at the end of the days.
John 11:11-14
He said these things; and after that He said to them, Our friend Lazarus sleeps. But I go so that I may awaken him out of sleep. Then His disciples said, Lord, if he sleeps, he will get well. But Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that He had spoken of taking rest in sleep. Then Jesus said to them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
Acts 13:34-37
And that He raised Him up from the dead, no more to return to corruption, He spoke in this way: "I will give you the holy promises of David." Therefore he also says in another psalm, "You shall not allow Your Holy One to see corruption." For after he had served his own generation by the will of God, David fell asleep and was added to his fathers and saw corruption. But He whom God raised again saw no corruption.
1 Corinthians 15:51
Behold, I speak a mystery to you; we shall not all fall asleep, but we shall all be changed;
1 Thessalonians 4:13-16
But I would not have you ignorant, brothers, concerning those who are asleep, that you be not grieved, even as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will also bring with Him all those who have fallen asleep through Jesus. For we say this to you by the Word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord shall not go before those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself shall descend from Heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ shall rise first. For God has not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we watch or sleep we should live together with Him.
1 Thessalonians 5:9-10
Either you'll be alive when judgment day arrives, or you will be dead (asleep). Some sleeping will be awakened only to a bad time--but others will be rising victorious out of a grave they will see no more.
