Child Molestation is a Sin!what right does anybody have to call it a sinThe simple answer to this is that I see nothing wrong with exploring options of change if you really wish to change. Presupposing of course that it IS truly possible and not just pie in the sky wishful thinking which I really suspect it is for true homosexuals, but anyway...I don't think it's right to brainwash people into wishing to change for the wrong REASONS. Religious faith is not a good reason in and of itself to try to alter something so innate. Why? Because it's unverifiable. It has no logical rationale towards the subject. It's pure belief in it's undesirableness. However many will disagree, and that's their right. But I could easily reference a lot more examples of people who have been HURT by these "ex-gay" ministries, then the very few that claim positive results, and have not one good thing to say about them. The problem here is that religion is basically coming across with these simple premises: 1) God says gays are bad, and this should not be questioned. Ever. Even if it's contrary to the decades of human rights campaigning that the world has orchestrated and commended. 2) All gay people should permanantly sever themselves from ever satisfying sexual urges. Those who do not have "failed" in some respect. Gays also have the option of faking heterosexuality, eternally lying to their spouses. In these cases, it is acceptible to break one commandment to spare a violating verse in Leviticus. I think this is a very dangerous and irresponsible thing to influence young children with because they don't know how to think critically, unfortunately it's the fault of our education system mainly. So they will take these types of teaching seriously, and feel real guilt and terrible feelings of unworthiness if they cannot expunge these feelings. This is where Chrisitianity can be held accountable for people who commit suicide over this religious dilemma many get caught up in. Social networks that help teach and counsel children and teens that homosexuality IS natural, help prevent these confused individuals from despairing that they are perverted and evil. Whether religious groups like it or not, they CANNOT dispute that simple fact. It IS natural. It is in our nature, AND in animals nature's. They may not like it, they may not have an explanation for this trait, they may find it repulsive, but it doesn't make one bit of difference. It is THERE. It is TRUTH. So to again reiterate against your post above, yes I have a problem with people accepting advice so blithely with no more credibility to it other than a belief that a 2000 year old collection of biographies says something is a certainty. At least as a beginning as to why you should even explore the fringe elements of science, ergo: dissidents. Especially when it keeps butting heads with the most updated evidence gathered from observing reality and assessing intrinsic harm, help, or neutrality with common sense and compassionate sensitivity. The bottom line is, your espousing of the idea of change is something you will have to live with the results of. Anyone you counsel from your Christian viewpoint who "fails" to overcome their nature can rightfully consider you an accomplice in their mess. If they get so depressed that they suicide, what's the difference between your counseling or a father who drove a son to suicide by constantly berating him with words like "You're no good. You'll never be the man I am. You're worthless and weak". The results were the same. The only difference is you would be doing it from the spirit of help, and the blows would be sugar coated, but nonetheless real in the damage done. I believe you want to help people, I know you believe you are doing it in the spirit of goodness, but I just see it as a very potentially harmful position with no very good basis to it. Not in the real world anyway. If there really IS an afterlife and there is some degree of truth to some of the things the Bible expects of you, then maybe it'll matter when we're dead. No one can ever prove it here though, and they never come back to tell us. That's the problem with religion. The only thing that could ever prove any of their beliefs is the one thing that is a one way street with no u-turn. That's why ultimately they rely on an "Appeal to Ignorance" fallacy as a reasoning for continued existence. |
