ArchivedOk. Hoping to educate through reasonjustforfun000, my comment concerning one-on-ones with me was in reference to my personal life and my personal journey out of gay life. You made a broad statement concerning Christian influences being the foundation for the APA's original inclusion of homosexuality in the DSM, I was showing you that the Freud, father of psychoanalysis was not a Christian. And today gay activism has denied real research from being disseminated by mental health professionals that can help those in need of real help. Both APA’s refuse to sanction any peer-reviewed studies into the psychological basis for a gay orientation. And this in spite of the fact that many psychiatrists and psychologists have called for such peer-reviewed studies. As to gay activists and Anita Bryant, you apparently don't know much about the history of gay activism in the United States. Anita, who later pointed the finger at her AOG pastor, started a campaign (which she won) to keep gays from owning property in Dade County Florida. At that time she was the national spokesperson for Florida citrus growers and the gay community called a national boycott on Florida citrus. Part of the gay response was to picket Anita's concerts and appearances at churches. The boycott worked and Anita lost her contract with the Florida citrus growers; churches that did not want to deal with the controversy cancelled her appearances, and she lost her recording contracts. Gay activists bankrupted Bryant and her husband divorced her. It is one of those quirks of history that Anita was the Viagra of the gay activists movement, which was dying for want of a national agenda. When Christians get upset over gay activism they need to know that a Christian was a major motivation for gays nationwide coalescing into a united national front. No, the problem is with the activism and the methods activists use. Disrupting professional organization meetings where real research is being shared to help those seeking help with a personal issue in order to force a change in the DSM III is not justifiable. What you don’t seem to understand is that the general public views the entire gay community in light of the few activists who are disruptive, obnoxious, rude, and out to force social change through liberal court decisions. On the other hand many gays want to judge all Christians in light of the KKK, Phelp’s, and Falwell. These individuals and groups do not represent Jesus Christ or what is taught in the Bible. Phelp’s and the KKK are on the lunatic fringe of society and Falwell, well Falwell is Falwell. I never hear gays refer to men like Rev. Al Sharpton or other Christians who actually support gay rights (and yes we do exist). Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci did not hide their sexuality, but neither did they shout it from the roof tops. People fear what they do not understand and the best way to achieve social change is through education not activism that is “in your face” type of activism. You brought up the Crusades and the Inquisition as an example of Christian activism that were in fact politically based. I don’t have the time or the desire to teach you real history but the facts are both the Crusades and the Inquisitions were motivated by the desire of the few to control the general populace, grab land, and steal the wealth of other nations. Galileo insulted the Pope (who was his friend) and therefore became the target of the Inquisition. The lesson to be learned here is don’t insult the powers that have authority over you. What started as an internal effort by the Catholic Church to stamp out heresy turned into a political tool to get rid of opponents of the ruling classes. The Spanish Inquisition is the best example of this fact. As to the controversies surrounding the 10 Commandments that has more to do with tradition than religion. The 10 Commandments are part of Western civilization and the foundation of much of our legal system. Let me ask you this, why is the fact some Christians and non-Christians who find abortion wrong picketing abortion clinics any different than gays picketing those who disagree with them? I appreciate that Tommy J recognizes that extremists do not represent all Christians, but why object to Christians using the same peaceful tactics used by other groups? Do you see gays picketing with signs that read “Heterosexuals Must Die”? No, but you don’t see heterosexuals picketing with signs that read “Celebrate Sodomy” or writing essays like Michael Swift’s “Gay Manifesto”. Some ignorant and bigoted homophobes actually believed this satire to be the foundation of gay activism. Gay rights groups insistence on using the courts to force public acceptance has resulted in many States amending their Constitutions to prohibit gay unions. Activism is a two edged sword that can actually defeat what you are trying to accomplish. Another example of picketing that was self-defeating has to do with the AIDS pandemic. When public health authorities were closing gay baths the media were filled with gay pickets carrying signs that read, “We have a right to our sex” and other slogans that painted the gay community with the broad brush of promiscuity. There are times gay activists are your worst enemy. |
