A badly contructed version of Pascal's Wager, the problem with the theory "its best to believe in God, because if God doesn't exist it doesn't matter, if he does you win." This famous philosophical argument has been ripped to shreds for over 400 years. The main argument against this is that you have no way of knowing that the God that exists wants to be worshipped in the fashion you worship your God, the Bible doesn't improve the probability that the God in that particular text is the one that exists. The basic theory that it is a small finite wager you place (eg. 70yrs ) on a possible infinite return of eternal hapiness (heaven), is flawed as it presupposes the existence of heaven, if it does not then what seemed like a small finite wager (70yrs) turns out to be a possible "infinite" wager, infinite in the sense that if all we have is 70yrs then we bet all on God's existence, this is a difference between a good and bad infinite. The other prong to the major objection is that what sort of God would turn someone away from heaven for an error of judgement? Is this the sort of god you wish to worship... Dan  |
