Judaism ForumBibles For Israel...Chag Sukkot Sameach Ryan Oh right so we may not be that dissimilar then, I imagine the differences lie in semantics. My observances or Heh lamed kaf (Walk with Gd or observances of laws, "halakah") are rooted more in what was said to be prevalent at the time of Jshua. The then hasidim (Essenes) as different to the present day Hasidim (Ultra Orthodox) seems to have been the major influence from what I understand. I can see that we have minor language differences. Quite why this is so is beyond me. I sure some Hebrew Scholar would clarify this. I am curious. It is odd because if you follow an Ashkenaz tradition we should not be that dissimilar. It is all a bit of an enigma to me to be honest Webmaster seems OK about it which is well cool. I hope I am not putting my foot in it when I say that I do understand why you may have felt that the admin may not be comfortable. But I have only been here a few days now and my first impression was to find the forum to be really open about issues across denominations and faiths. In fact it is perhaps the best forum I have seen for that and one of the reasons why I myself didnt feel uncomfortable mentioning my beliefs, or my rather confusing health problems. I certainly feel that I can learn much from you about my own traditions and where they came from. Admitted when I approach most modern day Messianic Jews they tend to be a bit confused about the observances I do keep. There is confusion about the Festival of Purim for example. Which I will go into in some depth at some time, we dont see that festival the same way. I dont feel comfortable about discussing that right now though. I have read and seen bitter argument about that before. I love your forums I so happy to see that Messianic Judaism is still going. To be honest there was a time when members of my family died in 1980 - 82, I actually believed the traditions and beliefs went with them. I got involved in a christian church but felt I had lost something. It was in 1989 I found out that there was messianic Judaism. Just not quite the same flavour I was familiar with. And since then I have been a little confused. But it is there all the same It is like we keep the same calendar and pretty much the same festivals. Only anything that is romanised is avoided like the plague. Like "2004" Julian Calendar, no no, despite it being based of Jshua's birth, it is romanised. Like the year is 5765, Sukkot is just finishing (I believe in orthodox circles it has finished). Next festival is the celebration of the law, (Shemini Atzret). and then the next biggest to us, Hannukah. To us Hannukah is very significant to you probably less so. To us Purim is well, seen differently, And as for Shabbat, which is Yom Sheeshee (at Dusk) to Yom Reeshon (At dawn) You stop at Yom Shabbat (At Dusk). The Orthodox Hasidim switch lights off and all manner of things. We are a little less legalistic on that. All these little differences, and different emphasis on different meanings and interperetations. It is actually quite amazing because the common thread (Jshua dying for us to save us all) is so wonderful Having said all that I feel I have a lot to learn from you Because culturally I do feel a little lost. Spiritually I have Jshua All the best to you Sophie. |
