ArchivedWhat is idolatry?Image and imagination are basically the same word. An image is the product of someone's imagination. It is a physical thing. Jesus was asked about something physical concerning worship by the woman at the well in John 4. Here is His response: "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth." This is quite opposite worshiping in a special place, let alone worshiping though a physical object. In addition, worship is a way of life, not something you do at a particular time. It is involved in all you do, say, think, and are. It is a live obedient to God, a life of loving Him and your neighbor. It is giving Him the glory when others offer it to you. It has nothing to do with some sort of formal prayer in front of a statue! Is a depiction of the crucifixion wrong? No, not necessarily, but remember that thousands were crucified. Yes, He died to satisfy eternal justice where our sins are concerned, and to achieve atonement for us. That is essential. But it is not the end. He conquered death. He rose from the grave triumphant. So why do you want to commemorate only half the story? For if Christ be not raised from the dead, our faith is in vain. Let the depictions be of the glorious Resurrection, not of the horror of the body on the cross! Death has been conquered. There is no need to commemorate it! |
