Christian/Muslim ThreadsAre there elements of paganism in the religion of Islam? Are there elements of paganism in Islam? While I am highly sceptical of the exact statements of Allah the moon god, I am strongly convinced from my presence observance that things are not as related to the Abrahamic faith as the Muslim tends to assume. Indeed there seem to be evidences of strong pagan-Jewish syncretism, and the evidence is not that absent.
It is obvious that Umar felt uthmost hesitation to engage in a act which to a pre-Islamic society, and to the ancient world was globally considered as a act of submission to polytheistic forces. However, he had seen Muhammad kiss the black stone, thus the practice according him seemed acceptable. Clearly pagan elements is the uneasy focus here, but the 'nevertheless' seems to solve the issue.
It becomes a literal fact, the pracitice of Muhammad created an uneasy awerness, as it seemed inconsistent with the broader focus of Islam, that of strong monotheism. The point which is raised by scholars is whether Muhammad simply syncretised all the previous pagan elements into one monotheistic religion. And the black stone may prove to be an evidence of that. |
