Salaam Lady Fatima,
re: not Sunna and non-obligatory
Should only your opinion matter, I would have nothing more to say on subject. Your assertion female circumcision is non-obligatory and excision of the clitoris is forbidden, is opposed to Shafi'i law. That Islamic law states, circumcision of girls by excision of the clitoris is mandatory. This particular form of female circumcision is widely practiced in Egypt, where the Shafi’i school of Sunni law is followed. I suggest, if truth of the matter is truly desired, you contact a Shafi'i jurist and rely less on Islamic sites which propagate an Islam for western consumption.
My pervious post intentionally avoided mention of Sunna and clitoris excision in deference to Muslim who are opposed to all forms of the practice. Should a Muslim wish to reject the practice without further comment, fine, then matter is between the person and Allah. I was not interested in creating a conflict between person's sensibility and religious beliefs, but neither am I interested in the argumentative being presented as knowledgeable argument.
The following link maybe of interest. If anyone finds less ambiguity from the Islam answer man than what Muslims have offered here, please let me know
