ArchivedDoes society define Christian standards?Your wine example applies only to the United States and maybe England. Have you spoken with European Christians where even children drink wine with meals? Jesus drank wine. I know that many fundies maintain that new wine is nothing more than grape juice, however until Pasteur developed pasteurization what we know as grape juice did not exist since grape juice is pasteurized to prevent fermentation. Grapes start the fermentation process immediately after being squeezed. The Scriptures do not tell us to avoid wine, beer, or intoxicants it tells us not to get drunk. Alcohol in small quantities is not detrimental to your health; in fact a judicious use of alcohol can help prevent hardening of the arteries as the alcohol in the blood burns off the impurities. When my parents were going through their divorce my mother was given Valium to calm her nerves. She accidentally overdosed and was required to attend suicide prevention classes. Her doctor told her that a glass of wine would have the same effect as the Valium. So my mother started drinking when she was in her 50’s because the doctor was correct. My great uncle was an alcoholic and had stopped drinking until he had heart problems and his heart specialist told him to have an oz. of alcohol every night. It was with trepidation his family followed the doctor’s advice. To their amazement Neil did not resort to his old habit and the judicious use of alcohol prevented his being prescribed prescription drugs. Autopsies done on alcoholics have revealed their veins are as supple as newborns, although their livers were destroyed. So that is the Biblical restriction about intoxicating beverages, use it sparingly not to dissipation. Paul told Timothy to drink a little wine to aid with his stomach problems. So what you have in regards to wine among some Christians in the U.S. is a prejudice based on bad theology. |
