Christian/Muslim ThreadsAllah used By Christians and Jews before Islam ?Again, I don't read anything from anyone. I don't care about Jack Chick, and I did not even know about him until a few weeks ago when some of his followers started showing up in a Shia forum which I frequent. I my doubts arise from the information Muslims present me with. I have read different sources, and I keep hearing that the word Allah is the generic term for God, which is NOT a name, but a title. But when Muslims continually say that it is A NAME, then that raises the question, as to whose name is it, since it is not the name of Yehovah? And when I read that the generic term for god in Arabic is 'ilah', then that only causes my doubts to grow in regards to the NAME Allah. If it is a title, then I am fine with it, because we use the term God (english), and we use Theos (greek), and we use Deus (latin), and El/Eloah/Elohim (hebrew and chaldean), which are generic terms for the 'concept' of god. But these are not names, they are titles. The same as saying 'lord', that is a title. I read the page you sent me to, and the person seems to be more like a liberal catholic, who promotes 'interfaith', which gives me reason to doubt the legitimacy of this work. He is not seeking to be objective, but he is seeking to find soemthing that will 'unite' the two, and with that predisposition to mingle the faiths, I must be careful in accepting his word. Now, truly, I am not saying that he is to be considered a liar or anything of that sort, just that he might exagerate some things, in a noble cause to unite the faiths. As noble as his cause might be, I examine his work. Also, he doesn't seem so scholarly as you portray him to be -- he find difficulty explaining his own cause. I read the whole page, and I could not get a good feel of what the 'Arabic Heritage' was that he was talking about. He first said that the first was the Greek, Latin, and then the Arabic... but then getting to the end, he says that the first was the Arabic, but throughout the page, I could not quite understand with exactitude what it was that he was talkinga bout. But what do I have to do with Jack Chick? I have not condemned anyone of anything like that. I am criticizing the inconsistency in the use of that term or name. No, I don't need to show proof, this is in the Bible. You say you were a christian, then you must know this. Did I say that he was the only person with that name? I said his is the only name given by which Mankind could be saved. I did not say that he was the only one given that name. I mean, I have written numerous times about the name of Yehoshua in the NT (Iesous) and Yehoshua in the OT (Joshua), why would I turn and try to say that he was the only one with the name? My statement stands. The Qu'ran uses the term Allah to refer to God. Does the Qu'ran ever use a name other than Allah to refer to God? I believe he is a natural arabic speaking Muslim. Though I am not sure... He used to be a Jew, so he claims... You can go to his site, if you like, but I don't think he is that much of a friendly fella... He is very hostile towards Christians -- I know from experience. So, Allah and Ilah are the same? Is that what you are saying? I am just trying to get this straight. Well, I am testing your argument against theirs. I am doing exactly that. Your source seems to have an argument, but being that it is not a scholarly work, I am not sure who I should uphold; the source you gave, or the source I gave. |
