i imagine people at the time of jesus had as many and varied opinions as they do now.
people would as now find the idea of renouncing wordly goods extreme. how would they live?
consider Matthew6;29-31. if you are considering money you cannot be entirely dedicated and faithful.
the riches in heaven refer to the work of the holy spirit on the individual. the more of the holy spirit we experience the more we see worldy goods as a burden and how EASILY we let them go.. so with God all things are possible.
jesus makes the distinction between the householder and the disciple. and being a follower of christ is just that. downing nets and becoming a disciple. being a righteous householder is good but it is not being a 'follower' of christ. there had many prophets and teachers before christ. jesus was sent with the specific task to spread the message to new converts. if you are of the old wineskin ilk great. but jesus came to make us fishers of men.
the word christianity would be an anathema to christ. he told his disciples that anything two or more of them agreed to pray for would be granted by God. matthew18. he wanted people to have a direct relationship with the source not create a new organised religion.
he is also quite clear about the evangelist and money.
Mark6 7-10
Matthew10 1-11
Luke 9 3
he underlines this when he urges the disciples to eat with the households they visit. does not a labourer deserve his wages? luke10:7. no money.
as concerns the talents, are we talking abilities or money. cos, i was talking about money. yes worldly goods will come into our care from time to time but only so they can be used to further the cause.
consider the good samaritan's two denarii.luke 10;35. the benefit felt will depend on our skill. moving gold and silver around does not constitute single ownership of it.
consider also mark 10:41. martha has berated jesus because her sister has spent her time listening to christ rather than helping her with the chores. jesus attaches more importance to the the spiritual path than becoming wrapped up in the importance of jobs.
leisure time?
i think' doing well 'on the sabbath day refers to doing good rather than gaining money. ie. you'll grab a drowning sheep because you are counting the cost... how much better to save a man. that quote refers to another of the pharisees tricks trying to catch jesus out on the laws of keeping the sabbath.
peace be with you.
