Omega, I don`t really follow you right now.
Nick, I figured you meant the 2nd law of thermodynamics, and I`ve read about it. it`s used in a very old creationist arguement, actually.
Sounds like you don`t agree with creationist arguements using this law, I would agree with you, and explain it like this:
The two basic things this law says is:
-All physical processes create entropy (disorder).
-The entropy of a closed system cannot decrease, ie- entropy can be created but not destroyed.
Creationists (pseudoscientists) seem to say, when they read this law, the following:
"The second law of thermodynamics says that complexity cannot be spontaneously created, so it is impossible for natural processes to create a complex organism from a simple organism! There, your own science proves evolution can`t happen!"
If they took the time to learn it instead of groping for anti-evolutionary bullets to shoot back at us, they would realize that it does not say that complexity cannot be spontaneously created.
Somehow creationists see "the entropy of a closed system cannot decrease" and "complexity cannot be spontaneously created." as the same thing. I`m at a loss as to why this arguement lived so long.
Some things they don`t consider when trying to argue our science against us as an attack on evolution:
-A living organism is not a closed system
-Complexity is not the destruction of disorder
-Physical laws apply all the time, to everybody, regardless of intent or intelligence
That last point is a interactive God killer.
You asked, and yes, I claim to be an Atheist, but I admit I arrived here after realizing I could not use science to rule out a deity. But notice a deity squashes any notion of the physical laws of nature being changed or altered in any way, from outside, inside, whatever. A belief in deity pretty well destroys any world religion (although some philosophies may survive).
The physical laws are unchanging and unalterable, so The Conclusion would be that if there be a creator, he created from outside the universe and never entered it, never even knew we would be a product of it, and most certainly didn`t talk to people.
Welcome to the Church of God the Utterly Indifferent.
At that point Atheist is my title.
