Another interesting point to be made:
If Jesus never claimed to be God, why did "the Jews take up stones to stone him for blasphemy" so many times? Although He may have never said the words that translate into the English phrase "I am God," if you understand what Jesus was saying and look at it from the cultural standpoint of a 1st century Jew, you will clearly see that Jesus did claim to be God on many occasions.
The verse that Aineo alludes to - John 8:58 - says "Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am." Any Jew knows that when Jesus used the phrase "I am," He was claiming the identity that was revealed to Moses at the burning bush. Recall that when Moses asked "whom shall I say sent me?" God replied "I am that I am." Jesus, by claiming the name "I am" was making a clear assertion that He was God. And if you don't think that the Jews understood that, look at the next verse - John 8:59 "Then took they up stones to cast at him..."
BTW, sorry for all the Scripture references, but as Aineo mentioned, it's practically impossible to answer without looking at the Bible at least a little bit.
