Science, Creation & EvolutionBig Bang Beats Bible?First, I would congratulate you on your stand for Biblical authority. Second, I would say that it is not heresy to allow the Holy Spirit to do some rounding in His calculations. In reading through the first 5 books of the Bible, you come across a ton of numbers. The ones that stick out in my mind right now are the ones in Numbers where the counts of all the men of war are listed for each tribe. Do you really think that all of the tribes had such round numbers? Couldn't the tribe of Judah (see Num. 1:27) have had 74,603 people? or maybe 74,572? Finally, I would point out that believing in inerrancy and infallibility of the Bible and believing that the Bible is in all cases literal and without room for elaboration or intelligence are two completely different beliefs. If you believe the Bible is always literal, then you'd have to believe that Jesus' actual physical appearance in the Book of Revelation is that of a lamb. If you believe that the Bible has no room for elaboration, then you'd have to believe that when God told Peter not to call unclean what He has called clean, God was only referring to the fact that we're allowed to eat different kinds of foods now. If you believe the Bible has no room for intelligence, then you have the example you came up with above. However, inerrancy and infallibility speaks to the accuracy of the Bible as a whole and the fact that it's message is the same and non-contradictory throughout. There is room for intelligence in the Bible (indeed, what is intelligence apart from it?), but when you start believing intelligence that is contrary to the Bible, then you're on dangerous grounds. |
