There are so many thing on this earth that could wipe us on the face of the planet that it's not even funny. Most of those are human creations, but they are devastating, nonetheless. You would probably want a natural extinction to occur, they are much less painfull. I'd take a supervolcano, 10-point earthquake, or asteroid over nuclear winter any day!
Whose says it has to be supernatural? The Biblical account of the destruction of Sodom and the cities of the plain could and probably was a volcano. What would happen to this earth if it was hit with an asteroid? Lets say an extinction size asteroid hit in the middle of the Pacific what would be the effect on the Indian sub-continent, the islands of the Pacific, the coast of China and etc.? Fully 1/3 of the earths population lives in India and China and most of earths islands are in the Pacific.
Rev 8:8-12
8 And the second angel sounded, and something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea; and a third of the sea became blood; 9 and a third of the creatures, which were in the sea and had life, died; and a third of the ships were destroyed.
10 And the third angel sounded, and a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of waters; 11 and the name of the star is called Wormwood; and a third of the waters became wormwood; and many men died from the waters, because they were made bitter.
12 And the fourth angel sounded, and a third of the sun and a third of the moon and a third of the stars were smitten, so that a third of them might be darkened and the day might not shine for a third of it, and the night in the same way. NAS
The Bible tells us Jesus will return in the same manner and place He left and when His foot touches the earth the Mount of Olives will split east and west. The upper end of the Great African rift runs directly beneath the Mount of Olives.
So you could say the stage is set for the Lord's return and is found in the "imperfections" of God's creation.
