ArchivedGerani, youll want to read thisCorrection..... Catholics worship the cross and crucifix. You seem to be in the same boat as gerani - needing a brush-up course on the differences between Christianity and Catholicism. Crosses can become idols when the focus goes more toward the pieces of wood themselves than to Jesus. However, Christians do not put undo emphasis on the symbol of the cross. We use it as a reminder of what happened on the cross, namely, Jesus took our sins upon himself and offered us a way of salvation. But the cross itself is not the object of our worship - Jesus is. Crucifixes (or crucifixi or whatever the right plural form of that word is), on the other hand, don't have any place in a Christian church. They depict Christ as still hanging on the cross and needing to be sacrificed over again everytime we sin or everytime we take communion. This is a Catholic idea. Christians belief that Christ was crucified once for all, and that He was buried, rose again, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father. Thus to have a symbol in a Christian church that shows Christ still hanging and suffering on a cross is heresy. |
