Archivedhinduism: THE FACTS.Yes and no. The name "Christian" obviously has only been around since shortly after Christ was here. So in that sense, no, Christianity hasn't been around since the beginning. However, the core beliefs, the main ideas (namely faith in God) have been around since the beginning, only under a different name. The name change happened at the time of Christ, but the system itself is still the same. The problem that non-believers bring up in regards to this is the fact that so much is different in the OT than it is in the NT, mainly with regard to all the laws that OT Jews had to follow that present-day Christians do not. The error in this kind of thinking is that the non-believer does not recognize that it's not the keeping of certain laws or the doing of certain works that gets us to heaven. Faith in God is what gets us there. The OT Jews were saved by faith, not law-keeping. NT and beyond Christians are saved by faith, not works. It's the same religion, just a different name. (Don't misunderstand, present day Jews who are still practicing the OT law-keeping and do not accept Christ as Messiah are not the same religion - they are trusting in the keeping of those laws to save them, not God.) I hope this makes sense. |
