Hinduism is a religious and social tradition which has developed over several thousand years, making it one of the oldest religions known. It is found primarily in India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, as well as being significant in a number of other countries, from Nepal to Fiji.
Hinduism is extremely varied with no one sacred text or body of doctrine; and unlike most religions, it has no single belief concerning the nature of God; it embraces polytheism, monotheism and monism.
Hinduism developed from the Vedic tradition, and from these scriptures or Vedas have come new texts such as the Bhagavadgita, which helped to establish cults relating to the deities Vishnu (Krishna) and Shiva. It also outlines the central idea of moksha, or the liberation of the soul from the perpetual cycle of death and rebirth; the state of the soul in this cycle is established by the idea of karma.

One of the most striking features of Hinduism (to western eyes) is the lack of demarcation between spirit and flesh.
