The OT is our tutor not our ruler. The NT modifys the OT but does not eliminate the morality codes.
Human beings are not perfect. God will judge those who are Christian in name only. As to why so many Christians are anti-gay I wish I could answer that question. I do know why so many are anti the gay agenda and I agree with them. Even a cursory study of history will reveal that an increase in the acceptance even promotion of homosexuality is the last indicator of decline. It happened in Greece, Rome, and other cultures. However, this decline is also not because of the increase in homosexuality as much as the decline in heterosexual morality and the adoption of egalitarian concepts that lead to anarchy.
Phelp's and Westboro Baptist Church are about as Christian as; well what I was going to post is not Christian either. Phelp's is applying OT law and from what I have seen of his activities is a hate filled man in need of professional help. He and his organization do not portray Christ and His teachings.
The media jumps on any news story that makes Christians look like bigots and hate mongers, which reflects a liberal media bias.
As to what Jesus taught; although He gave us a new commandment "love your neighbor" the first and highest commandment is "love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, and soul." Jesus ate and associated with the dregs of society but that does not mean He approved of their lifestyles. What many non-Christians seem to ignore is that Jesus not only taught "love" He said: "I have not come to bring peace but a sword." Jesus tells us that faith in Him would split families and communities.
Non-Christians and some liberal Christians see accepting behavior as "love". When in reality true love says "NO" to destructive behavior and limits exposure to such behavior is every parents responsibility and decision. It is not up to the Government to dictate morality for me or anyone else. However, it is up to the Government to represent the people and adhere to our Constitution, not pass legislation based on special interest groups with political power and lots of scratch. This is not a mandate to judge them, as only God has that authority. However, we do need to vote our conscious as the alternative is approving what God has labeled an abomination and we will be held accountable for every word we speak and every act we commit or omit.
