The Jews were also forbidden from riding horses and holding judicial or civil posts, and were forced to wear a yellow patch for identification: 637 http://www.us-israel.org/jsource/History/islamtime.html Officially, Jews were considered a tolerated minority (dhimmis) whose social inferiority was to be enforced by law. In the 17th Century "Pact of Omar," which defined the status of non-Muslims in the Islamic empire, the Jews and Christians agreed "not to attempt to resemble the Muslims in any way with regard to their dress, as for example with the...turban..." http://www.ucalgary.ca/~elsegal/Shokel/ ... rbans.html The idea of such a discrimination seems to have been derived from Islam, in which the dress of the Jews was distinguished by a different color from that of the true believer as early as the Pact of Omar (640), by which Jews were ordered to wear a yellow seam on their upper garments (D'Ohsson, "Histoire des Mogols," 1854, iii. 274). This was a distinct anticipation of the Badge. In 1005 the Jews of Egypt were ordered to wear bells on their garments and a wooden calf to remind them of the golden one (S. Lane-Poole, "History of Egypt," 1901, vi. 126). Later on, in 1301, they were obliged to wear yellow turbans (ib. pp. 300, 301). It may have been some sort of retaliation for a similar restriction placed upon the Christians in Islam, since the order of the Council applied to Saracens as well as to Jews. http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/view. ... 3&letter=B "A reexamination of the Crusades reveals that the crusader-armies that advanced along the basin of the Rhine River, searched for Jewish communities and exterminated them (to become closer to God). When they entered Jerusalem on July 14, 1099, the first thing they did was to gather the Jews of Jerusalem in one of the churches and burn them. When the Muslims, headed by Omar Ibn Al-Khattab, conquered Jerusalem in 636, the Patriarch Sofronius asked only one thing from our master Ibn Al-Khattab: that no Jews remain in Jerusalem and that none enter the city. The Caliph Omar fulfilled this request, and it entered history as 'The Pact of Omar.'" http://www.cdn-friends-icej.ca/antiholo ... ality.html Sharia Laws http://answering-islam.org.uk/Books/Gibb/sharia.htm The meaning of names among Mediterranean Jews The root of the name may consist of two components in Hebrew 'am' and 'shalem', infering to an origin from Jerusalem or to an affinity to the people of Israel. It may also mean 'entire people' or 'perfect people.' The name is widespread among North African Jews, mostly in Morocco and Algeria. The root of the name 'amsalem' may have an Arabic meaning, refering to 'convert to Islam' or a person who is protected by Islam as 'dhimi' under the Pact of Omar. http://www.virtualpublications.ca/html/ ... salem.html Medieval Sourcebook ~ Omar http://www.fordham.edu/cgi-bin/search.c ... hrase=omar |
