ArchivedPius IX declares Pope is Christ in the Flesh!newseed Wrote I was not going to join this debate, because I am currently debating in Quran Vs Bible forum, however newseed "wondered" how I would explain this perticular issue. So here I am First of all What is Infallibility? Fallible comes from the word "to fail". Therefore, something or someone that is infallible cannot fail. More specifically, in Latin "infallibilis" means to be free from error. This is what infallible means when we talk about the Pope. There are two common myths about Infallibility. Infallibilty Myth #1: If the Pope is Infallible, he can't commit a sin. Infallibility (unable to err) is not the same as impeccability (unable to commit a sin). The Pope is Infallible, and this ensures that what he says is true, but he could still commit a sin and go to hell. So, even though the Pope is Infallible, he could still be a bad Pope. Unfortunately, we have had many bad Popes, especially during the Renaissance. Infallibility Myth #2: It is because the Pope is Infallible that we have to obey him. This is not the reason we have to obey the Pope. We have to obey him because he is the head of the Church. The Pope's Infalliblity has to do with what he teaches, and not with commands that he gives. In everyday life, we have to obey many people who are not infallible. A command is good or bad, but not true or false. A very important point to remember about the Pope's Infallibility is that it has to do with "true" and "false" and not with "good" and "bad". Someone who says something true could do something bad or could be a "bad" person, and someone who says something false could do something good or could otherwise be a "good" person. Infallible Definition of Infallibility At Vatican Council I (1869-1970) the Infallibility of the Pope was solemnly defined. The definition gives three conditions for Infallibility, and one counter condition. This means three things: 1.The Pope is not always infallible, but only under certain conditions 2.To make an Infallible statement, the Pope must satisfy all three conditions in the definition. 3.If the counter condition is true, then despite everything else, we can be sure that what the Pope is saying is NOT Infallible. For example; If the Pope Teaches new doctrine, or not guarding the revelation passed on from the Apostles he is not infallible(he is in error). If the Pope speaks as head of the Papal Household, or as a citizen of Italy, or as a native of Poland, then he is not Infallible, because he is not speaking ex cathedra and using his full authority as Supreme Pastor. If the Pope speaks on something that is not a doctrine of faith or morals, he is not Infallible. If the Pope says that the scientific theory of evolution is a fact, then he is not Infallible, because scientific theories are not doctrines of faith or morals, but matters of secular science. If the Pope says that one political party is to be supported and not another, then he is not Infallible, because politics are not doctrines of faith or morals. If the Pope orders a special catechism for Italy, then the catechism is not Infallible, because the catechism is not intended for the Universal Church. If the Pope teaches something new, or something never before taught in the Church, like Ecumenism, he is not Infallible. You must understand what infallible means.
