ArchivedPius IX declares Pope is Christ in the Flesh! It seems the Peter the rock business came after the 5th century. The Apostolic Succession is based on Peter's authority being passed from Peter to each succeeding Bishop of Rome. However, during the early years of Christianity each church was in effect its own authority based on Scripture and the teachings of the Apostles. Before each Apostle moved on he trained and appointed a pastor for every church he established in effect giving each pastor the same and equal apostolic authority in the process. The supremacy of the Bishop of Rome was limited to the designation as presiding Bishop over church councils after Constantine made Christianity the state religion until the Bishop of Rome assumed, by political influence, the designation of "Pontifix Maximus, after Boniface III was elected Bishop of Rome in 607. With the ever-increasing political power gained by the Roman Catholic Church this authority was enforced with military power and the crusades resulted in the overthrow of competing Bishops. The 4th crusade resulted in the capture and sacking of Constantinople and sealed the split between Rome and the Greek or Byzantine church. In order to heal the schisms that resulted over time Rome has allowed various Catholic Churches to maintain their own traditions and catechisms, which is why some Orthodox Catholic Churches (Eastern rite) that now accept the supremacy of the Pope have married priests and Bishops. The Apostolic Succession is a false doctrine that cannot be established Biblically. Christ, not the Pope is the head of the universal Church of Christ, not a fallible man elected to head a fallible organization. It is also notable that the Catholic dogma stating the infallibility of the Pope when speaking "ex cathedra" was declared during Pius IX's "reign" as supreme pontiff. |
