During Biblical times Oils and herbs were used as medicines, offerings, cleansers, beauty aids, purification, to repel evil forces and influences, and many other purposes. The spiritual influences of holy herbs, incense, and oils, then were recognized and acknowledged without question.
Frankincense and Myrrh is used during biblical times in many ways as indicated throughout the Holy Bible, too many verses to list here, and was given as a gift to our Lord Jesus Christ upon His birth (Matt 2:11). Hyssop is used in the bible for cleansing and protection "Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean…" (Psalm 51:7). Balm is used for healing (Jeremiah 8:22; 51:8c). Olive Oil, an important product of the Promised Land, is the basis of all anointing oils and a prominent symbol of blessing and prosperity for the people of God.
Oftentimes anointing oil used in the Bible is just plain olive oil, blessed by God through the priest, prophet, etc...
Incense symbolizes our prayers going up to God. It was customary for incense to be burned when entering the temple of the Lord. Aaron burns incense to stop a plague. (Numbers 16:46-50)
Then Moses said to Aaron, "Take your censer and put incense in it, along with fire from the altar, and hurry to the assembly to make atonement for them. Wrath has come out from the LORD ; the plague has started." 47 So Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly. The plague had already started among the people, but Aaron offered the incense and made atonement for them. 48 He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped. 49 But 14,700 people died from the plague, in addition to those who had died because of Korah. 50 Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, for the plague had stopped.
WebMaster I totally admit we use a lot of Incence in our Catholic Churches is it wrong?
