Did you not also learn that Jesus also "broke" some of those laws as well? The main point of His mission was to teach those who think they will only be saved by following the law. Do you remember?
Luke 14:1-6
1"One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched.
2There in front of him was a man suffering from dropsy. 3Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?"
4But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him away.
5Then he asked them, "If one of you has a son or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull him out?"
6And they had nothing to say."
Jesus just broke the law according to God's commandment given to Moses. And that wasn't the first time He's done that. His point was that LOVE is the best commandment because it fufils all the laws. I would like to take a moment to try to be logical....
Christians follow these main commandments in the OT [not Moses' law]
ONE: 'You shall have no other gods before Me.'
Jesus told us to love god with all our heart Mark 12:28-30. If you love Him with all of your heart, obviously you are not putting any other gods before Him.
TWO: 'You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.'
I myself don't understand this one too much...can someone explain it to me more please? But from the limited knowledge that I was taught, it meant not to have any idols because this is a form of idol worship. If we love God, we will not have any other images of anyone else.
THREE: 'You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.'
If you love God, you will not use His name without reason.
FOUR: 'Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.'
for Christians, the sabbath is on Sunday. This is a time for us to show our love for God together as a community. We shouldn't be doing the usual things [work] as we do during the week.
FIVE: 'Honor your father and your mother.'
If you love your parents, you will honour them. Also this is pleasing to God so we are showing more love to our heavenly Father.
SIX: 'You shall not murder.'
SEVEN: 'You shall not commit adultery.'
EIGHT: 'You shall not steal.'
NINE: 'You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.'
If you love someone, you are not going to hurt them by committing the above acts.
TEN: 'You shall not covet your neighbour's house; you shall not covet your neighbour's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbour's.'
Same thing here. If you love your neighbor you will not do these things and make trouble for yourself and everyone around you. You are also sinning against God.
Ultimately if you follow all of these things, you are showing true love to God. It's very hard to do some of these things for some people.
In society when someone breaks the law, although they may go to prison and come out, they are frowned upon because of what they did in the past. Mary the prostitute was a good example. They wanted to stone her [because that was the law], however Jesus spared her and forgave her of her sins. He broke the law again....or was He trying to convey something to us that we cannot see? Was He trying to teach us a lesson? What did Mary do afterwards? Did she go back to becoming a prostitute? No, she started following Christ because maybe He was the first person to ever show her what true love was all about.
Matthew 7: 12Treat others as you want them to treat you. This is what the Law and the Prophets are all about. (CEV)
Luke 6: 32If you love only someone who loves you, will God praise you for that? Even sinners love people who love them. There is no true merit in only loving someone that loves you. The old saying of one hand washes the other. I'll do this for you, but what can you do for me? This is an act of selfishness and of the devil. God is beyond that.
"Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him." (NIV, John 14:21)
So true love is the answer because if you love someone and treat them as you would want to be treated, you would not have any problems.
Sorry so long....I was just moved to explain the glory of our Christ and show how wonderful He truly is. ops: AMEN!!
