This can be taken as literal or figuratively. God created in 6 days or 6 creative time periods of undetermined time. The idea of "day" being a literal 24-hour day can be question by the description of the 7th day, which is not described as the evening and the morning were the 7th day. Gen 2:2-3
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. KJV
Not all Christians, including me, accept a literal 24-hour day as the true understanding of Genesis 1, as there is internal Biblical evidence to indicate Genesis 1:2ff could be a recreation after the revolt of the angles. Those who accept a literal 24-hour day assume angels were created during this process, however: Job 38:4-7
4 "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell Me, if you have understanding,
5 Who set its measurements, since you know?
Or who stretched the line on it?
6 "On what were its bases sunk?
Or who laid its cornerstone,
7 When the morning stars sang together,
And all the sons of God shouted for joy? NAS
The Bible states "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Gen 1:1 The Hebrew word created is "bara", which is only used 3 times in Genesis 1: 1:1, 1:22, and 1:27.
