Ergun Mehmet Caner is Professor of Theology and Church History at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. Dr. Caner was born in Stockholm, Sweden and was raised the son of an Islamic leader. In 1982, he converted to the Christian faith. As a consequence of this conversion and his call to the ministry, he was disowned by his father. Caner has three Masters Degrees and two Doctorates, the Doctor of Theology coming from the University of South Africa. Along with his brother, Dr. Emir Caner (Professor of History and Anabaptist Studies at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary) Ergun is author of eight books, including UNVEILING ISLAM (Kregel 2002), SACRED TRUST (Broadman and Holman 2003), and MORE THAN A PROPHET (Kregel 2003). UNVEILING ISLAM has sold over 100,000 copies, and recently won the Gold Medallion Award from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. VOICES BEHIND THE VEIL (Kregel 2003) became a best seller in October 2003. He and his wife, Jill, have a five-year-old son, Braxton Paige.
The youngest of three brothers and the only one born in the United States, Emir Fethi Caner was reared by his Turkish father to be a devout Sunni Muslim. Upon arrival in America, the Caner family planted their roots in Columbus, Ohio, where Emir’s father, Acar, soon became one of the leaders of the Islamic Center. In 1982, Emir was invited to the Stelzer Road Baptist Church, a small Southern Baptist congregation, where he surrendered his life to Jesus Christ, the Son of God and Savior of the world. Soon after, he was disowned by his father due to his new-found faith. In the following years, both his mother and grandmother became Christians, placing their faith in Christ. Emir went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies from The Criswell College, his Master of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and his Doctor of Philosophy in History from the University of Texas at Arlington. Today, Emir is Associate Professor of Church History and Anabaptist Studies at Southeastern Seminary. Along with his brother, Dr. Ergun Mehmet Caner (Professor of Theology and Church History at Liberty University), he is the author of eight books including Unveiling Islam, More Than a Prophet, and The Sacred Trust. Presently, Unveiling Islam has sold more than 100,000 copies and has been translated into Spanish and German. Furthermore, it recently won the Gold Medallion Award for the Book of the Year in Evangelism/Missions from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. Since 9/11, Emir has appeared on such notable programs as Billy Graham’s Decision Today, Janet Parschall’s America, John Ankerberg, and many others. He and his wife Hana have one son, John Mark, who is nearly 18 months old.
